A Midsummer NIght’s Dream: A Fever Dream Worth Having
Written by Brigid Boyle | A Midsummer Night’s Dream – preview performance 23 July 2026
For one weekend only, Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis is transformed into Athens as Happily Ever After Productions (HEAP) delights audiences with William Shakespeare's iconic A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The stunning set (credit: Lynn Vogel and Dano Hawkins) and soft, playful lighting (credit: Ivo da Silva, Yann Belin, and Trevor Hargrave) evoke the romance, drama, and magic of the story before the play even begins. When Hippolyta (Claire Worland) and King Theseus (Shiro Mungai) burst onto the stage with palpable chemistry, the audience is immediately swept up in the fever dream.

HEAP is known for its big, bold musical theatre productions, and this first foray into straight theatre is no less a triumph… and anything but straight. Director Niamh Merritt and Assistant Director Anthony Ramos deliver a delightfully queer interpretation of the well-loved play, deftly embracing its whimsy, surrealism, and sheer fun.

Bringing the story to life is a talented cast; the Athenian lovers, a host of mischievous fairy folk, and the delightfully shambolic Mechanicals. Each cohort demonstrates an excellent command of Shakespeare's language and a clear understanding of their role within this chaotic world, with standout performances throughout. Particular praise must go to Nick Herman, whose infectious energy and fearless physical commitment make for a riotously entertaining Nick Bottom.

Franck Pagnon as Puck brings an equally captivating physicality and sparkle perfect for the mischief and chaos he creates. His scenes with Casey Kooyman's superb Oberon showcase Shakespearean comedy at its finest. Together with Camille Gribbons' commanding performance as Titania, the trio masterfully create the enchanting fairy realm into which the lovers wander. This world is a visual feast, and the expert work of Viivi Valpuri (costumes) and Rachel Kooyman (hair and makeup design) is a true highlight of the production.
